Snape Residency:
Rachel Jones, Hey, Maudie
at Britten Pears Arts

The creative team behind our 2023 Practicing Performance commission Hey, Maudie with Rachel Jones has been invited to the Snape Residency at Britten Pears Arts, Suffolk in November 2024.

Hey, Maudie is an operatic work which we originally commissioned with Rachel Jones and premiered in London in September 2023. The Snape Residency will enable Jones and the creative team who developed the performance in collaboration to develop the work further supported by the facilities and expertise of the Britten Pears Arts team.
Hey, Maudie draws inspiration from Gwendolyn Brooks' 1953 novel Maud Martha, and evokes the many facets of the eponymous character’s life, from moments of joy and curiosity to expressions of frustration and desperation. With RIA’s support, Jones embarked on an initial phase of R&D and then invited poet Victoria Adukwei Bulley and composer Joseph Howard to collaborate on her concept for a live, opera-based work.

While in residence, Jones and her collaborators will develop two new acts, workshopping ideas with musicians and singers including Gweneth Ann Rand, the soprano who brought the character of Maud Martha to life in the London premiere. The work-in-progress will be performed on 29 November 2024 at 4pm.
