Liu Wei
Exotic Lands No.16, 2012
Doors, wood
206 x 156 x 4 cm
Part of a generation in China that grew up in a period of rapidly accelerating urbanisation, Liu Wei has frequently turned to architectural and urban themes in his work. While he presents the city as a dynamic and vital force, he often raises questions about contemporary urban life: the way we plan, build, consume and experience our cities.
Exotic Lands No.16 is part of a series of structures assembled from building materials discarded in Beijing. Reusing the found beams, doors and planks Liu Wei takes an orderly yet imaginative approach and when reassembling the materials, one that makes controlled social and political structures in contemporary urban environments more nonsensical.
